Two-stage BIM-based decision support system for selecting a suitable industrialized building system

Abstract

According to the scientific literature, 98% of mega-projects in the construction sector have cost overruns of more than 30%. There are several reasons for this, the most important of which is productivity. Off-site manufacturing in construction is a solution for increasing productivity, but there is currently a lack of studies linking it to the design concept for manufacturing and assembly. The combination of BIM and off-site construction (OSC) could maximize their benefits for the construction industry, and their applications are highly recommended for improving construction efficiency. The aim of this project is to help improve construction efficiency through the integration of OSM in construction, BIM and digital manufacturing. The specific objective is to develop a BIM-based decision support system (BeDSS) for the use of digital manufacturing in off-site construction manufacturing for multifunctional components or parts of buildings. This research will also identify the key success factors for improving construction efficiency with OSM. The contribution to the body of knowledge will be the result of this research, including an in-depth discussion of key trends in off-site construction, research gaps and recommendations for short-term perspectives in off-site construction.

Areas of research : Automation, Industrialization.

Project results

The result of this research is a two-stage decision support system (DSS) that is BIM-compatible and validated by construction experts in Canada. The proposed decision support system is integrated with Autodesk Revit, which is capable of automatically extracting parameters from the BIM model and helping the user to select an appropriate industrial building system from its database.

Project contributions

This research will also identify the key success factors for improving construction efficiency with OSM. The contribution to the body of knowledge will be the result of this research, including an in-depth discussion of key trends in off-site construction, research gaps and recommendations for the near-term outlook for off-site construction. This research will support digital manufacturing and industrialized construction in Canada through the proposed BeDSS.
