Adding value to construction projects, a user-centered approach.

Abstract

The need to improve the way buildings are delivered is driving the built heritage industry to develop innovative approaches to their design and construction. The Integrated Design Process (IDP), a participatory method, has received a great deal of attention in recent years. IDP seeks to harness the capabilities of a multi-disciplinary collaborative team to deliver a more effective and efficient use of resources. This article presents the preliminary results of constructive design research exploring the use of PDI combined with other methodologies and concepts such as Lean Led Design (LLD) and Target Value Delivery (TVD) in large-scale complex projects in Quebec – Canada. This article presents the results of the first part of this research, a comparative analysis of the use of PDI itself and PDI combined with lean design. Preliminary results show better alignment with the organization’s functional needs when PDI is combined with lean design.

Project results

For the time being, the results show a real evolution in needs, requiring better requirements management to cope with them throughout the project. There is also a lack of alignment between the discussions held and the preliminary deliverables of the professionals and the expectations of users in terms of the ease of use of the installations. The expected outcome of this research is the definition of the best way to align currently existing participative methodologies with target value delivery, in order to correctly capture user needs and deliver value.

Project contributions

There is a lack of information on the creation of user value in construction projects, so this research will add to the academic knowledge base. As far as the industry itself is concerned, the approaches used in industry today are largely focused on the paying customer and on reducing waste, costs and risks. In other words, little attention is paid to the user. Documenting the positive results of using an approach involving the user can have a leverage effect on the use of such an approach by the industry.
